HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR LEATHER
Every Mariflor piece is handcrafted from natural materials — smooth leather, suede, and cowhide fur — each with its own character, and its own way of being cared for. A little attention at home goes a long way toward keeping them beautiful for years to come.
Smooth Leather Boots
Wipe your boots down after each wear with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and dirt before it settles into the leather.
Cleaning
Use a leather cleaner or a damp cloth for everyday marks. Always test on a small, hidden area first.
Conditioning
Apply a leather conditioner or cream every few months to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking, especially through drier months.
Polishing
Buff with a soft brush or cloth to restore shine after cleaning or conditioning.
Storage
Use boot trees,or pool noodles to help hold their shape. Store away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can dry and crack leather.
Avoid soaking your boots in water. If caught in rain, wipe away moisture as soon as possible and allow to air dry naturally, away from direct heat.
Suede: How to Care for Your Suede Jacket
Suede is a delicate leather with a soft, napped finish, so it asks for a slightly different approach to care than smooth leather.
Brushing
Use a dedicated suede brush to gently lift dust, dirt, and flattened patches in the nap. Always brush in one direction, following the natural grain of the suede.
Protecting
Treat new suede pieces with a suede protector spray before their first wear, and reapply every few months with regular wear. This helps guard against water and stains.
Scuffs and marks
Gently rub a suede eraser or clean pencil eraser over scuff marks, then brush through with your suede brush to restore the texture.
Water and rain
Suede and water don't mix well. If your suede gets wet, blot (don't rub) excess moisture with a clean, dry cloth, then let it air dry away from direct heat, out of sunlight. Once fully dry, brush gently to lift the nap back into place.
Stains
For oil-based stains, sprinkle a little cornstarch or talcum powder over the mark, leave overnight, then brush away. For anything stubborn, we recommend a professional suede cleaning service rather than attempting it at home.
Storage
Keep suede pieces in a breathable dust bag, away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time. Hang jackets on a padded hanger to help them keep their shape.
Cowhide Fur: How to Care for Your Cowhide Bags
Cowhide fur is a natural hide, so every bag carries its own unique markings and pile — part of what makes it one of a kind.
Brushing
Gently brush the fur with a soft-bristle brush in the direction of the hair to keep it looking full and remove any loose dust.
Cleaning
Spot clean only. Wipe any marks immediately with a dry cloth — avoid water, soap, and cleaning products on the fur itself.
Sunlight
Keep out of direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure can fade and dry the hide over time.
Storage
Store in a breathable dust bag, in a cool, dry place. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of your bag, or folding it in a way that compresses the fur or leather trims.
Moisture
Keep away from rain and damp conditions where possible. If your bag does get wet, blot gently and allow to air dry naturally, away from direct heat.
What to Avoid
- Soaking leather, suede, or cowhide fur in water
- Direct heat, including heaters and hair dryers, to speed up drying
- Harsh household cleaning products, soaps, or alcohol-based solutions
- Storing pieces in sealed plastic, which can trap moisture
- Prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade and dry natural materials
